OccupyEducated Creates a Virtual Library for the #Occupy Movement: What Books Would You Recommend?

..how can the movement preserve the work that’s been done in these physical spaces? One project that is looking at just this question is theOccupyEducated.org initiative. In response to the confiscation and physical destruction of books at Occupy Wall Street, a group of activists have created a virtual library and education center that provides a list of primer books; hand-selected articles and commentary; author interviews and more to come. Occupiers are asked to participate by contributing to new “Top 5” lists for different Occupy topics, and to participate in constructive discussion forums.

The plan is to eventually also include book clubs, author Q&As and local library donation drives.

So what books would you recommend?

Occupy Wall Street Library Evicted

The NYPD raided the Occupy Wall Street camp in Zuccotti Park last night, tossing tents, tarps, pallets, sleeping bags and 5,554 books into dump trucks. This afternoon, the Mayor’s Offices released some welcome news: “Property from #Zuccotti, incl #OWS library, safely stored @ 57th St Sanit Garage; can be picked up Weds.”

….According to the city’s eviction notice, the “property will be stored at the Department of Sanitation parking garage at 650 West 57th St.” But the librarians disputed this: “it was clear from the livestream and witnesses inside the park that the property was destroyed by police and DSNY workers before it was thrown in dumpsters.”

Last night the NYPD loaded 5,554 books from the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) People’s Library into dump trucks as they evicted the New York City camp. Tonight a group of ReOccupy Writers supporters will bring books back to the former OWS library site.

NYPD destroying American cultural history, they’re destroying the documents, the books, the artwork of an event in our nation’s history … Right now, the NYPD are throwing over 5,000 books from our library into a dumpster. Will they burn them? … Call 311 or 212-639-9675 now and ask why Mayor Bloomberg is throwing the 5,554 books from our library into a dumpster.
